For office or gaming, processors are the brains of any computer and able to complete multiple tasks of varying demand, responsible for processing instructions and controlling the other components. Most CPUs also include on-board graphics too so you can use a display without needing a separate graphics card. AMDs APUs can be a good all round option for light casual gaming while Intels are quite capable of general purpose use with video acceleration. 

For more demanding tasks that require multiple cores, the AMD Ryzen and Intel Core 7/9s are well suited to such demanding workloads for those who need more than just games/office/internet.
